National Girl Child Day is commemorated on 24th January of every year to raise awareness among the public regarding inequalities, prejudice, and exploitation faced by girls in society for generations. A girl-child should be nurtured and given care. It is an initiative undertaken by the Ministry of women and child development to deliver support and possibilities to the girls of India. This day is meant to initiate awareness about the rights a girl owns which provides them opportunities like everyone else and to remove gender-based biases.

India is the country with the second largest number of girls in the world, and most of them are unaware of their importance. So, it is necessary to create awareness among girls that they are equally important as boys & they should be given equal opportunities to shine in every field. It should be recognized by each individual because it not only promotes awareness about the inequalities that girl children face still today in their everyday life but also educate people about the importance of education to girls and what changes they can bring to society as a whole.

The priority is to change society’s perspective towards girls, put an end to female feticide and develop awareness about the decreasing sex ratio.

How it all began?

In 2008 the Government of India took this huge step and decided to look into serious matters like female feticide etc. and came up with National Girl Child Day, to be observed every year on January 24 to boost the consciousness of society towards a girl child so that she can be cherished and appreciated like others.

A plethora of steps were also taken by the Government to fulfill the objectives of National Girl Child Day.

The women and child development ministry listed several steps taken by the government in this regard, like:

  • Save the Girl Child
  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao
  • Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
  • CBSE Udaan Scheme
  • Free or subsidized education for a girl child
  • Reservation for women in colleges and universities

It is a day to celebrate the girl child’s potential that is needed to change the face of India, to break the glass ceiling to fight the girls’ battle against illiteracy and malnutrition, and to expose the lack of basic facilities like girls’ toilets and security, to protest against child marriage and child labor, to encourage them to study and take up leadership roles, empower them to make their own choices and to live life on their own terms. The Union ministry of women and child development took the initiative to spread the message of equal rights, equal protection, and equal opportunities for girls. Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor is the brand ambassador for the campaign.

It’s high time we treat girls with equal rights and opportunities. So we should also celebrate National Girl Child Day this 24th January by promoting equality and educating as many people as we can about the significance of our precious girls and that they are no less than anyone!
