As a parent, you will be checking a baby growth chart to determine the development of your little one. There is nothing more beautiful than watching your baby grow right in front of your eyes. These are some of the most memorable moments that make parenting interesting.

Well, there is a lot of growth happening in the first year itself. At times you may feel that something has gone amiss in your baby’s growth and development. Actually, your little one is experiencing baby growth spurts. So, what are baby growth spurts? Let’s explore this in detail below.

Baby Growth Spurts

A baby growth spurt marks an intense period of growth for your little one. During these periods, you can see changes in your baby’s sleep patterns, hungrier and, maybe crankier. Don’t worry. Growth spurts only last a few days, at most a week.

There is no pre-set time for baby growth spurts. Every baby grows and develops differently. However, we can expect growth spurts during the following timelines.

  • 1 to 3 weeks of age
  • 6 weeks
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months

According to most baby growth charts, length and weight are the indicative factors for development in a child. Your baby will be losing almost one-tenth of its birth weight within the first week of their birth.

A growth spurt may happen between the first 3-6 weeks where they should have returned to their birth weight. Toddlers exhibit fewer growth spurts. After the age of one, the rate of growth mostly becomes steady.

Signs of Baby Growth Spurts

Your baby will show some signs of growth spurts. Check out these symptoms in your baby.

  1. Crankiness

Your baby will become fussier during growth spurts. These intense periods of growth can wreak havoc on their sleep and feed patterns. No wonder, this will put them on a crankier mode.

  1. Sleep Changes

Expect more midnight wakings and little sleep when your baby is having growth spurts. According to a 2011 studyincreased sleep bouts mean that your baby will grow within the next 48 hours.

  1. Extra Hungry

The midnight wakings will also include snacking. The growing body will make them hungrier. Don’t expect your little one to be satisfied by one bottle during these growth spurts.

Whenever your baby demonstrates these symptoms, take steps to care them extra. Baby growth spurts mean that your baby is developing at a fastened pace.
